IMC Island ehf.

IMC Island ehf. is a licensed GSM mobile operator based in Reykjavik, Iceland. In 2000, IMC’s network, Viking, was awarded a GSM 1800 license by the Iceland Post and Telecomm Administration (PTA). IMC provides domestic mobile service in Iceland through Alterna, and has coverage in more than 185 countries and territories through its 420 plus roaming relationships with other international operators.

In March of 2010, IMC Island launched Alterna, a new company offering local mobile service in Iceland. Branding itself as an alternative to the two prevailing carriers in the area, Vodafone and Síminn, Alterna now has 1400 pre and post-paid subscribers. Alterna’s service plans include free incoming calls and texts, free in-network calling and text, and affordable international calling.

Alterna operates its own network through IMC’s GSM network, Viking, and has a roaming agreement with an exceptional rate with Siminn. The combination of its own network coverage and agreement with Síminn make Alterna the largest distribution network in Iceland. Alterna offers all the typical conveniences of large GSM carriers: porting numbers from other carriers at no additional cost, the option of sim card only or sim card plus handset, automatic payments, online or in-store shopping and sign-up. Alterna offers a suite of Nokia, Sony, and LG handsets.

In the future, Alterna plans to offer additional services such as home phone and internet.
